Custom screened porch building in Stowe VT

Project Description

This Stowe family had one of the best views in Vermont — Mount Mansfield right out the back — and spent most of the summer indoors to escape the blackflies and mosquitoes. Their open deck was beautiful for a few weeks a year, but they wanted a space they could actually live in from the first warm days of spring through peak foliage in the fall, without the bugs and without giving up the mountain view.

Decks US designed and built a custom screened porch that turned that view into a room. A gabled roof — engineered for Vermont’s heavy snow load and matched to the home’s existing roofline — shelters a warm tongue-and-groove cedar ceiling, while full-height screening keeps the air moving and the insects out. The floor is Western Red Cedar, naturally rot-resistant and warm underfoot beneath the protection of the roof, and cedar posts frame clean sightlines straight to the mountain. A ceiling fan handles the warm afternoons, recessed and ambient lighting carries the evenings, and an easy screen door steps out to the yard. Every footing was set below the frost line for Vermont’s deep winters. What used to be a few good weeks a year is now the family’s favorite three-season room.
