Decks US built a three-level Western Red Cedar deck that gives each activity its own room. The upper level sits flush with the French doors for dining and lounging, sheltered beneath a substantial custom cedar pergola now carrying an established wisteria — which turns the whole structure lavender for a few weeks every spring and throws genuine dappled shade through the summer. A wide central staircase descends to the middle level, built around a stone fire pit with cedar bench seating wrapping two sides. From there the deck steps once more onto a curved bluestone patio holding a stone-based outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill, sink and granite prep surface. We ran traditional turned cedar balusters with a wide flat top rail throughout — a profile that suits the colonial architecture far better than anything modern would — and finished every board with a penetrating UV sealer to hold cedar’s warm tone. Integrated LED lighting runs under each stair riser and beneath the rail caps, so the descent is safe and the whole structure glows after dark. Every footing sits below the frost line, and the horizontal cedar skirting conceals the framing while letting the structure breathe. It’s a deck that asks for a weekend of attention every couple of years and gives back a material nothing synthetic quite replicates.
