Project description
This Wellesley family had a beautiful backyard they almost never used. A steep, awkward slope off the rear of the house made the original deck cramped and disconnected from the yard below, and the old pressure-treated boards had gone gray and splintered after years of New England winters. They wanted a low-maintenance outdoor living space they could actually enjoy — room to dine, relax, and host — without giving up the wooded view that drew them to the home in the first place.
Decks US designed and built a two-level composite deck that works with the slope instead of fighting it. The upper level flows off the kitchen for dining under a custom cedar pergola, while a wide staircase steps down to a lower lounge level closer to the yard. We finished it in Trex® Transcend composite decking for a warm, fade- and stain-resistant surface that never needs sanding or staining, and framed the whole thing in black aluminum railing with horizontal cable infill to keep the sightlines to the trees wide open. Built-in bench seating, integrated LED post and stair lighting, and hidden fasteners give it a clean, premium finish — and because every footing was set below the frost line, this deck is engineered to stay solid through decades of freeze-thaw. What was once an unused slope is now the family’s favorite room in the house.
